    “要是军服太花哨，打死我也不去当兵了。穿那种红灯笼裤，活像个娘儿们。那种裤子我看就像女人穿的红法兰绒内裤一样。”

    “你们要上温德先生家去？要去的话可是吃不上什么晚饭了。”吉姆斯说，“他家厨子死了，新的还没买来。他们叫了个庄稼汉做饭，他家的黑伙计们告我说，全州上下就数她做饭做得糟。”

    从以上摘录可以看出，美国南北战争爆发前夕的南方是积极备战的，不仅社会舆论导向往战争上引，而且军队训练、兵士来源、军官选拔都已有一整套具体的方式、方法。

    不学无术的这对双胞胎兄弟，显然对于战争没有属于自己的独立思考，人云亦云，盲目乐观，甚至把战争当儿戏看，对于战争的残酷性根本毫无认识，对于保证战争胜利的内在因素根本无任何实质性的认识。

    这双胞胎兄弟家，光黑人奴隶就有一百多，是个相当富有的庄园主之家，养尊处优惯了，对于穷人，骨子里一百个看不起。

    但是，他们所盼望的美国南北战争即将爆发，将迎来大规模的社会沧海桑田。
